I have spent over 30 years traveling around the globe and this establishment is a natural 5 stars! The rooms are pristine, airy, and restorative. The food is spectacular! Everything is fresh, healthy, and perfectly proportioned for the guest. The property has an incredible number of amenities considering everything was built from the ground up. Beautiful plants and flowers blanket the property with fragrance and elegance. Stone pathways take you from sleeping quarters to a fire pit, dining room, yoga studio, sauna, and riverbank. All the rooms have wi-fi and there is a brand new laundry room for guests. Family pets include Tupac (the llama), Max and Juanita (the dogs), and Luna (the cat). The owners, Rudí and Claudia, took care of everything! Tours, permits, guides, transportation, and even private cooking lessons. They took such good care of us it was hard to return home. A stay at Spirit of the River Lodge is just as memorable as visiting Peru. It fills your heart with joy and becomes a second home. I cannot wait to return!Verified private trail experience (may 2025). homey with unexpected surprises. i enjoyed using the dry sauna after a long day's hike. food is approachable; accommodates dietary restrictions. some micro-beer, peruvian and chilean wines. the hotel organized a day's sightseeing in the sacred valley with guide, roni. this was enjoyable on its own, and as a first day's effort living at high altitude near 10K feet/3000m. my group of five ascended one of the salkantay passes with the hotel owner, rudi, a few days later. we visited machu picchu and many other inca sites along a 4 day trek through urubamba province. rudi enjoys sharing his knowledge of andean culture and pre-columbian history. the lodge organized all of the accomodations for the trek, including great camping gear, a cook and porters, pack animals and everything else we needed to enjoy spectacular scenery along the way. a truly memorable experience!Verified Lovely, remote place to stay while visiting the Sacred Valley We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Spirit of the River Lodge. Our trek to Machu Picchu wasn’t simply a vacation, but a sacred pilgrimage with his help. He shared with us his knowledge and culture and took us off the regular paths so that we didn’t see any other hikers for the first 2.5 days. It was an incredible journey that none of us will ever forget. We learned so much about the Inka history too. The Spirit of the River Lodge is a unique oasis with gorgeous gardens, a gregarious llama named Tupac and a fabulous sauna overlooking the river. We really enjoyed the yoga room overlooking the river and the wood-fired sauna that Rudi supplied with fresh eucalyptus. When you stay here, be sure to have dinner with them- their trout was the best we’ve ever had! Our only regret is not staying longer and booking a trek with Rudi- he organizes all kinds of trips and has a lot of experience with the Inka Trail and other activities in the area like rafting. I came to Urubamba hoping to recover from altitude sickness in Cusco, and Claudia’s hospitality made all the difference. She was incredibly accommodating with my last-minute booking and consistently responsive throughout my stay. That first night, she and her family prepared a delicious home-cooked dinner of fresh trout, veggies, and a comforting soup. Two nights did not feel like enough. There’s so much to do in the area. The hike to the Salineras de Maras is accessible on foot straight from the lodge. On my second night, I came down with a cold, but Claudia was so thoughtful and even ordered me pizza delivery so I could rest. As a solo female traveler, I felt completely safe, supported, and cared for. The lodge truly has everything you need. Waking up to the sound of the river every morning was a top tier experience.
