This journey blends highlights of the traditional Inca Trail into a shorter, more manageable trek. You’ll hike through lush landscapes, explore incredible archaeological sites, and enjoy freshly prepared meals along the way. Arriving at the Sun Gate late in the afternoon, you’ll catch a peaceful, crowd-free view of Machu Picchu. On day two, wake up early to experience the Lost City of the Incas with a guided sunrise tour before heading back to Cusco on a panoramic train.
The journey begins early in the morning, around 4:00 AM, with a pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. If your hotel is located in the Sacred Valley or near Ollantaytambo, the pick-up time will be closer to 5:30 AM. For those starting in Cusco, you’ll embark on a 1.5-hour scenic drive to the Ollantaytambo train station. Travelers staying closer to Ollantaytambo may opt to stay overnight in the area to shorten travel time in the morning.
At the Ollantaytambo train station, you’ll board a train that follows the winding course of the Urubamba River. This picturesque journey takes you to Km 104, the starting point of the trek. Upon arrival at Chachabamba, the trailhead, you’ll present your original passport at the checkpoint to begin your hike.
Before setting out on the trail, your trekking chef will serve a freshly prepared breakfast to energize you for the day ahead. Recharged and ready to continue, you’ll hike for another three hours towards the Sun Gate (Intipunku). Arriving at the Sun Gate in the late afternoon, you’ll be rewarded with an awe-inspiring view of the ancient citadel. This is the perfect time to visit, as the site is nearly empty, offering a peaceful and magical atmosphere.
From the Sun Gate, you’ll descend for about an hour to the main viewpoint of Machu Picchu, where you can take in panoramic views and snap unforgettable photos. As the day draws to a close, you’ll board a bus to Aguas Calientes, where you’ll have dinner at a top-rated local restaurant. Afterward, you’ll check into a comfortable 3-star hotel featuring private bathrooms, hot showers, Wi-Fi, and stunning views of the town.
The second day begins early, with breakfast served at your hotel before boarding one of the first buses to Machu Picchu. Arriving at the site just as the sky begins to brighten, you’ll witness the ancient city bathed in the soft light of dawn. Your guide will lead a comprehensive 2–3-hour tour of Machu Picchu, covering its most iconic areas, including the Temple of the Sun, the Main Plaza, agricultural terraces, and sacred ceremonial spaces. After the guided tour, you’ll have free time to explore the site on your own or choose to hike one of the additional trails, such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Montaña. These hikes must be booked in advance and offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes.
For those seeking a more relaxed pace, there’s the option to descend to Aguas Calientes via the original Hiram Bingham trail. Along the way, you can visit the Machu Picchu Museum and butterfly station, adding a unique touch to your journey.
