A full-day mountain bike outing starting in the Sacred Valley and going out to the Maras salt pans and the circular terraces at Moray.
This is for riders who want solid downhill mileage plus time to check out pre-Columbian agricultural sites. You climb by vehicle to high trailheads, then ride down old Inca footpaths and singletrack that feel raw and unpredictable. Ends with an overnight at the calm Spirit of the River Lodge, so you rest up before continuing on.
You will be riding high in the Andean mountains.
Most of the ride is downhill. But the high altitude will make you feel tired more easily, remember to take it slow.
For your comfort and safety we use a full-suspension mountain bike. This type of bike absorbs bumps better. Look for one with 150-160 mm of travel.
We strongly recommend a guide for this trip.
(Note: order of field stops swapped from some versions — Maras first, then Moray.)
Web Meet at the “Spirit Of The River Lodge” at 10:00 AM for a safety briefing and a thorough brake check.
As the ascends the road gains elevation and the air becomes noticeably thinner. Reduce your pace if you experience any altitude sickness symptoms.
Upon reaching the top of the route we star to the descent. The initial section is fast and contains open-flow segments, followed by technical stretches that require concentrated attention — rocky trails, loose scree and several narrow ledges. Riders will need to select precise lines rather than simply cruise; it is common to dismount once or twice where the trail becomes too constrained.
First stop — Maras salt Mines
The site consists of thousands of salt mines hewn into the slope, a feature predating the Inca period. The terraces form a distinct pattern and present a strong photographic opportunity. A short walk is required to view the mines up close. Note that dust from the trails frequently accumulates on the drivetrain.
Lunch is scheduled at approximately 1:00 PM at a local restaurant offering simple, substantial dishes. After lunch, resume cycling toward Moray.
The circular terraces at Moray are constructed as concentric depressions used to generate microclimates for agricultural testing. The temperature gradient across the concentric levels is the primary functional characteristic of the site. Participants will access the rim and some adjacent riding sections. If time is limited, a more extensive inspection may be omitted, although most participants opt for a brief visit.
In the late afternoon we return to Spirit of the River Lodge for check-in. Shower facilities are available and the lodge. The following morning we take the breakfast will be provided prior to departure.
