This route, accessible only by foot, provides an incredible hiking experience through pristine Andean landscapes. Perfect for those seeking a challenging yet rewarding trek, the trail leads to the archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo, also known as “Little Cusco.”
Huchuy Qosqo was once an important administrative and military center during the Inca Empire, with impeccably constructed stone buildings and grain storage facilities called Collcas, which were used to preserve corn and other crops. Situated at an altitude of 11,800 ft (3,650 m), this site offers a unique glimpse into the region’s rich history and culture. Originally called Kakya Qawani, the name “Huchuy Qosqo” was adopted in the 20th century. Among its impressive features are a great hall (kallanka) measuring 40 meters in length and an 800-meter-long stone-lined irrigation canal. The site remains inaccessible by road, adding to its mystique and allure.
Your day begins with a drive to the small town of Corao, located 30 minutes from Cusco. From here, the journey continues into the high Andes to the village of Qoricocha (13,287 ft / 4,050 m), where the trailhead for the Huchuy Qosqo Trek awaits.
The hike starts with a trail leading to the village of Sihua and then to the Pukamarca Pass (13,615 ft / 4,150 m). From the pass, you’ll enjoy incredible views of the Urubamba mountain range and the Sacred Valley. After reaching the summit, a short downhill walk brings you to the Pumamarka community, where you’ll stop for a well-deserved lunch.
Following lunch, the trek continues to the Puma Puncu canyon (“The Puma Door”), where you’ll walk along a restored section of an original Inca trail. This path leads to the secluded archaeological site of Huchuy Qosqo (11,811 ft / 3,600 m), perched high above the Sacred Valley. Your guide will take you on a detailed tour of the site, showcasing its temples, storehouses, terraces, and water reservoir, which played a vital role in the dry season.
After exploring Huchuy Qosqo, the descent begins. A two-hour hike downhill takes you to the village of Lamay (9,186 ft / 2,800 m), located near the Urubamba River in the Sacred Valley. A private bus will then transport you back to your hotel in Cusco, concluding your adventure.
