Lares Trek

This Amazin trek begins at Spirit od the River Lodge in the Sacred Valley and ascends over to the the Sikllakasa Mountain pass located over 48500 meters (15,400 feet) passing through traditional, colorful shantytowns and camping near the relaxing hot springs in Lares and unforgettable tour of Machu Picchu.

Day One

Start time
Between 5:30 am and 6:00 am

Travel
30 min bus ride from Spirit of the River Lodge to Chupani the head trail.

Highlights of the day
Our hike starts with a steady climbing toward the Sikllacasa mountain pass. We will follow the Cuyoq river up the stream. Half way into the climb we will stop for lunch at Pacchapata – Waterfall. The Lares trek is amazin off the beaten path hike. Sometimes we are the only Tour Company leading a tour here. After lunch, we will continue our steady climb toward our campsite at Cuyoq Chico. This location has the best views of the sky and the milky way. One of our favorite campsites.

Difficulty level
Moderate to Difficult. The trail starts at 2840m/9223ft climbing to 4200m/14000 ft, The Distance on this hike is relatively short. only 6 miles / 9km

Meals
Breakfast at the Lodge.
Lunch during hike and dinner at campsite. Vegetarian options are available. Please advise us if you require this option.

Accommodation
Camping in tents at a campsite in Cuyoq Chico.  The temperature at night is usually around 1°C/34°F. 

Day Two
Start time
Between 5:30 am and 6:30 am

Activities. Trekking all day

Highlights of the day
The climb toward the Sikllakasa-Pumahuanca pass continues to this day. After we finish our delicious breakfast, We will start our mission to conquer the mountain pass at Sikllaqasa 14,700 ft / 4850 m. After we reach the mountain top, we will descend the trail toward our lunch place at Cuncani. 3600m / 12000 ft. After Lunch, 30 minutes bus ride to  Lares the hot springs. The Lares hot springs will be the best reward for such a challenging and tiring day. After all, we have a bus ride to Spirit lasts 3 hours. At the Lodge, we will have dinner before we go to bed. 

Difficulty level
Difficult. The altitude gain becomes obvious, the air gets thinner and our pace slower. The total time to get the pass is 3 – 3.5 hours. 
Meals
Breakfast at the campsite in Cuyoq Chico.
Lunch during hike and dinner at the Lodge. Vegetarian options are available. Please advise us if you require this option.

Accommodation
Spirit of the River Lodge.  The temperature at night is usually around 5°C/40°F.

Day three

Start time
Between 4:30 am and 6:30 am

Activities. Tour in the Sacred City of Machupicchu 

Highlights of the day

Start time: 5:00 am

Transfer to Ollantaytambo 

Train ride from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes town

Travel: Bus to Machu Picchu

Highlights of the day: A walking tour (2 hours) of Machu Picchu with your guide.  Optional climb of Huayna Picchu (2720m/8923ft). It takes 45 minutes to reach the top.

bus to Aguas Calientes, train to Ollantaytambo and Bus to Cusco.

Difficulty level
Very Easy. Only a small walk back and forth toward Lares Town and then the bus ride to Ollantaytambo.

Breakfast in Aguas Calientes town

What’s Not Included:

  • Sleeping Bag: Can be rented at our office for $15 USD for the entire trip.
  • Trekking Poles: Available for rent at our office for $15 USD per pair for the entire trip.
  • Third Day Lunch and First Day Breakfast: Please arrange these meals separately.
  • Huayna Picchu Entrance: Optional climb available for an additional $35 USD per person.

Recommendations:

  • Passport: Bring your original passport with an expiration date of at least 7 months.
  • Student ID: ISIC card or student carnet, if applicable (must be sent at the time of booking).
  • Sleeping Bag: For a comfortable night’s rest (can be rented from the agency).
  • Footwear: Mountain boots and sandals are essential.
  • Trekking Poles: Can be rented from the agency.
  • Warm Clothing: Layered clothing suitable for varying temperatures, especially for nighttime. Include thermal wear, gloves, scarves, wool socks, and a wool hat.
  • Headlamp: Highly recommended for early mornings and nighttime.
  • Camera and Spare Batteries: To capture the stunning landscapes and memorable moments.
  • Sun Protection: Sunscreen, hat, and sunglasses.
  • Personal Medical Kit: Include any necessary medications and first aid items.
  • Insect Repellent: To protect against bugs during the trek.
  • Rain Gear: A high-quality raincoat, rain pants, and a plastic poncho.
  • Toiletries: Small towel and toilet paper.
  • Extra Money: For drinks, tips, souvenirs, etc. (preferably in soles or dollars).
  • Swimwear: For the optional thermal baths.
  • Water Bottle: A recommended 1-liter bottle to stay hydrated.
